Music which, contrary to popular belief, does not need to be loud, nor fast to fit under the said moniker. Rooted in the avant-garde of The Velvet Underground, who despite drawing influences from free jazz and swing-- elements that would later be thrown out of the mix when "punk" came to full rise-- laid the blueprint for the aesthetic of what is now considered the "punk" mentality; defying rock conventions and creating music that was messy, unpolished, and primitive. VU's experimentalism carried into their live performances, in which they would commonly improvise songs (an art predocessors, and fellow New Yorkers Television would incorperate into live shows), as well as create feedback and distortion noises. After VU, The Stooges, a Michigan-based proto-punk band, formed and followed the same philosophy. Led by the infamous Iggy Pop, The Stooges may have "rocked" far harder than VU, but nontheless had VU's flare for being controversial; not only did they follow in VU's footsteps by writing lyrics that blatantly reference drugs and sex, but putting on bizarre live shows, in which Pop would perform shirtless and cut himself, as well as cover his body in peanut butter. While VU managed to gain slight acclaim with their ties to artist Andy Warhol, at the time of their existence, The Stooges enjoyed virtually no success, and barely sold any records at all. Shortly after The Stooges, The New York Dolls formed, not only adding to the blueprint for what would shortly thereafter become punk rock, but doing the same for "glam" rock; dressing in drag, drawing influence from the likes of David Bowie, and playing 'Stones-inspired songs that would eventually influence the likes of Motley Crue and Poison. However, like VU and The Stooges before them, they never broke through to the mainstream audience, and disbanded in the early seventies. Now the year was 1974; bands like The Ramones, Talking Heads, and Television began to form. The Ramones, whose music was influenced by bubble gum and girl pop as much as it was by the likes of the Rolling Stones, played fast, catchy, simplistic three-chord rock songs, and became the first punk band to play regularly at CBGB's. Talking Heads, whose music was more diverse and pop-sounding, soon followed suit, as did Television, whose music was more complex and jazzy, as well as having featured revolutionary, dueling guitars. Richard Hell & the Voidoids were also key players in what is now considered the CBGB's New York punk scene. While The Ramones and Talking Heads would enjoy lasting careers, and, in the case of Talking Heads, critical acclaim and mainstream success, Television self-destructed after two studio albums, including the classic "Marquee Moon." While similar fate struck many other New York punk bands, their influence nontheless managed to stretch across the pond, hitting England. Bands like The Buzzcocks, The Clash, Evlis Costello & the Attractions, and The Sex Pistols began sprouting up, and the punk rock scene reached it's height between 1977 and 1978. While The Clash and Elvis Costello both managed successful careers well into the eighties, the death of Sid Vicious essentially marked the end of punk, and as bands like Joy Division, and Echo & the Bunnymen began what would become the post-punk movement. So when you kids are trashing The Strokes for being overhyped and trendy, despite taking a page from the likes of VU and Television, who had more to do with punk rock than Operation Ivy ever did, and when you're calling New Found Glory "too soft," when Talking Heads seldom used distortion, just remember-- none of the bullshit you listen to is punk rock, so it doesn't matter\!

Punk is some of the greatest music of all time in my opinion. Real punk consists of bands like Minor Threat, Civil Disobedience, Leftover Crack, Bad Brains, A Global Threat, and so much more. (Notice I didn't put the typical Ramones or Sex Pistols because 1. they're not even that great 2. they ain't got shit on most hardcore punk bands out there and 3. they're kind of overrated.) Anyone that wants to say bands like MXPX or Lagwagon (I usually call them pussy punk, but even calling them any kind of punk at all is just insulting to the real deals) are punk deserves to be shot in the back of the fucking head, seriously. Notice that bands like that have a simple band name probably with no meaning behind it and lyrics that appeal to kids 12 and under...douche bag pussies. Bands like Bad Religion and A Global Threat a great meaning behind the title as well as the lyrics that usually have to do with the fucked up society we live in today. People may tell me that punk is dead but you know what? Doesn't mean I still can't like it. AND a lot of old school punk bands are still making great music today, so FUCK YOU\! =]

Contrary to what alot of people think about punk rock, it isn't a completely individualistic musical movement with no rules or boundries. If this were true, than pretty much anything could be punk rock, so long as the musicians intent was not adhere to any rules while composing the music. This would mean that classical, folk, new wave, pop, heavy metal, or any combination of the above, or a completely new genre of music never heard of before could all be punk. Bands such as mr bungle or fantomas who incorporate many genres into their music, and seem to never have two songs that sound the same should than be considered more punk than the ramones or the sex pistols, since they conform to no previous musical standards. The truth is that Punks tend to be very rigid about what they consider to be punk or not, more rigid than alot of people who listen to music other than punk. As soon as someone playing punk rock tries to incorporate some other genre into punk you'll here people say, "that's not punk, that's pop punk or new wave". Punk rock began, and is still considered today to be fast loud 3 chord rock and roll music characterized by either nihilistic lyrics about sex, drugs and violence, or some kind of anarcho-communist utopia. Some punks will say to you out of confusion that bands like avirl lavigne or simple plan aren't punk rock because they don't write their music or cause they are just playing music to conform to the rules of the masses, but who the hell are they to say that avril lavigne doesn't really believe what she's writing or playing is good, and she's just conforming to the masses. The fact is that Avril Lavigne will never be punk, not because she's dishonest, writing music just to make money and please people, but because she doesn't wanna have sex with a dog, drink whiskey by the gallon or shoot up heroin like dee dee ramone, iggy pop, sid vicious or captain sensible. Or Start some kind of anarchist or communist utopia like the clash, crass, dead kennedy's or bad brains. People get all caught up with the saying and doing whatever you want aspect of the music, but not enough on doing something that actually distinguishes you from the crowd, such as smoking crack, not brushing your teeth, living in a jungle, being an angry hippie ect.

In the '90s, punk of most kinds became acceptable and so lots of suburban kids did one out of three things- the All American boys and girls got into bubblegum punk, the nerdier ones bought Clash T-Shirts because it was dangerous to them, and some grew mohawks and called themselves true punks, even though all of their music was either from the seventies or wanted to be. All three of them have been part of the ruin of punk rock. It seems like there are more "true punks" than anything else here, so here's my message to all of you- you're one the right track, but if you wonder why there hasn't been very much good music since 1977, maybe it's because you've had the chance to make it but you were too busy pretending it was the seventies. Conterary to popular belief, punk rock is not Blink 182, GC, Billy Talant, etc. Punk rock is much more then that. Punk rock isn't 'punks singing rock'. Oh no. If thats the case there would be 'prep rock'. Punk rock is fast paste, short music, with songs about 2 minutes each, and in concert, the band could sing the whole c.d. in about 20 minutes. THATS punk rock.

An example of Punk rock are the Rosannes(Sp?)...or Disturbed or something like that.
